Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the victims with long bone injuries due to road accidents

Summary

This article represents data analysis of 139 cases with long bone injuries of polytrauma due to motor vehicle accidents which were treated in Poltava city hospital № 1 in the period from 2008 to 2011. The basic clinical and epidemiological characteristics: gender, age, mechanism of injury and involvement in the traffic were considered.

It was established that among the victims 61,87 % were male and 38,13 % — female, while the people of working age accounted about 66,19 %. The greatest risk of injuring the long bone due to road accidents has male in the age group of 31–50 years, while women — over the age of 70 years.

58,27 % of the victims were injured as a result of a direct blow, 14,39 % — as a result of falls, 5,04 % — due to tensile / compression and in 22,3 % of patients have had a combination of these mechanisms of injury.

The most of all among of the victims were pedestrians (58,27 %), drivers of two wheeled vehicles were 15,83 %, and drivers of four wheeled vehicles — 7,91 %, passengers of two wheeled vehicles were — 3,6 %. In general, passive members of the traffic accidents (pedestrians and passengers) amount about 76,26 % and active members of the traffic accidents (drivers) — 23,74 %.

The highest level of mortality was observed among the passengers of two wheeled vehicles (mortality rate 40 %). The mortality rate of drivers of two wheeled vehicles was 36,36 %, the drivers of four wheeled vehicles — 27,27 %, the pedestrians — 11,11 % and the passengers of four wheeled vehicles was about 5 %.

The problem of long bone injuries of patients with polytrauma as a result of road accidents has significant meaning in traumatology and orthopedics. The question of the clinical and nosological characteristics and treatments need clarification and further study.
